Event Description

The College of Wilderness Knowledge is offering us a chance to run some merit badge classes at Birch Bend for a camp out. Birch Bend is about 2 hours away. They will run small classes (patrol sized). We plan to have Emergency Prep (Eagle Required) and one non-eagle required badge provided by the camp ground.

We will meet at the Nativity Parking Lot at 4:00 PM on September 11. We plan to already have the trailer loaded at this time to minimize the number of people entering the school building. Scouts will camp in single tents, hammocks, or share a tent with someone from their household (sibling or parent). Families can drive their scouts to the camp themselves (2 hours each way) or ask for car pooling. We will leave camp around 9:00 AM on Sunday, returning to the school around 11:00 AM. The parish has strict guidelines on using parish property during the covid 19 restrictions, so we need to be extremely cognizant of the image we portray while gathering on parish grounds. Social distancing is important, respecting school property is imperative.

Cost is $30 per scout. Adults attending are free. Still deciding how to feed adults, we could have an adult "patrol" that cooks and eats together, or we could embed adults with each patrol to maintain social distancing guidelines.

Scouts will remain in patrols on the camp out. Each patrol tenting near each other, cooking together, eating together, and attending the merit badge class together. Each patrol will have its own latrine to use. We will run this very similar to how Tomahawk ran in July. We will bring a large supply of hand sanitizer (a Scout is Clean). There is an opportunity for scouts not attending merit badge classes to participate in a service project.

This is a great opportunity for us. The College of Wilderness Knowledge runs a lot of scouting programs in an exciting, natural environment. We should have a lot of fun on this camp out.
